Fuel Cost Calculator

Calculate the fuel cost for your trip. Enter trip distance, vehicle fuel efficiency (MPG), and current gas price to estimate your fuel expenses.

Your vehicle's fuel economy

$

Price per gallon or liter

Fuel Cost = (Distance ÷ MPG) × Price per Gallon. For round trips, double the distance.
500-mile trip, 28 MPG, $3.75/gallon: 500 ÷ 28 = 17.86 gallons × $3.75 = $66.96 total cost. With 4 passengers: $16.74 each

How do I calculate fuel cost for a trip?

Divide your trip distance by your vehicle's MPG to get gallons needed, then multiply by the price per gallon. For example: 300 miles ÷ 25 MPG = 12 gallons × $3.50 = $42.00 total fuel cost.

How can I improve my fuel efficiency?

Maintain steady speeds (use cruise control), keep tires properly inflated, remove excess weight, avoid aggressive acceleration/braking, and keep your engine tuned. Highway driving is typically more efficient than city driving.

What is the difference between MPG and L/100km?

MPG (miles per gallon) is used in the US - higher is better. L/100km (liters per 100 kilometers) is used in most other countries - lower is better. To convert: MPG = 235.214 ÷ L/100km.

Should I account for real-world vs. EPA fuel economy?

Yes, real-world fuel economy is typically 10-20% lower than EPA estimates, especially in city driving. Use your actual observed MPG from recent fill-ups for the most accurate cost estimates.
