Brick Calculator

Calculate bricks and mortar needed for your wall project. Includes waste allowance and supports multiple brick sizes.

Typical: 5-10% for waste and breakage

Wall Area = Length × Height\nBrick Coverage = (Brick Length + Mortar) × (Brick Height + Mortar)\nBricks Needed = Wall Area ÷ Brick Coverage\nTotal Bricks = Bricks Needed × (1 + Waste%)\nMortar Volume ≈ Bricks × 0.0015 m³ per brick
Example:\nWall: 10m × 2.5m = 25 m²\nBrick: Modular (190×57 mm)\nMortar: 10mm joints\nWaste: 10%\n\nEffective coverage: (200×67mm) = 0.0134 m²\nBricks per m²: 74.6\nBricks needed: 25 × 74.6 = 1,865\nWith 10% waste: 2,052 bricks\nMortar: ~3.1 m³

How many bricks do I need for a wall?

The number depends on wall dimensions, brick size, and mortar thickness. Standard calculation: (Wall Area ÷ Brick Coverage Area) + 5-10% waste. A typical modular brick (with mortar) covers about 0.05 m² per brick.

What is the standard brick size?

Common sizes: Modular brick (190×90×57 mm or 7.5×3.5×2.25 in), Standard brick (215×102.5×65 mm or 8.5×4×2.5 in), King brick (230×76 mm). Dimensions vary by region and type. This calculator uses modular as default.

Should I include mortar joints in my calculation?

Yes! Mortar joints add 10mm (⅜ inch) between bricks. This reduces the number of bricks needed compared to laying them touching. The calculator includes standard 10mm mortar joints in coverage calculations.

How much waste should I add?

Industry standard is 5-10% extra for breakage, cuts, and irregular shapes. Complex patterns or lots of cuts need 10-15%. Simple rectangular walls need 5%. Always round up to whole brick quantities.

How do I calculate mortar quantity?

Mortar volume = (Number of bricks × Mortar per brick). Typical mortar consumption: 1.5-2 cubic feet per 100 bricks for standard walls. The calculator estimates mortar based on joint thickness and wall area.
