How much does a square foot of glass weigh?
The weight varies by thickness. Standard 1/4-inch soda-lime glass: about 3.3 lbs per sq ft. 3/8 inch: 4.9 lbs/sq ft. 1/2 inch: 6.6 lbs/sq ft. 3/4 inch: 9.8 lbs/sq ft. 1 inch: 13.1 lbs/sq ft. Tempered glass is slightly heavier. A typical 36×48 inch shower door (1/4 inch) weighs about 39 lbs. An aquarium (48×18×18 inches, 1/2 inch glass) weighs about 156 lbs empty.
What is the formula for glass weight?
Glass Weight = Volume × Density. Volume = Area × Thickness. For rectangular glass: L × W × T × density. For circular glass: π × r² × T × density. Soda-lime glass density = 0.09 lb/in³ (2.5 g/cm³). Tempered glass = 0.093 lb/in³. Borosilicate (Pyrex) = 0.089 lb/in³. Always calculate weight for structural support — shelves, tabletops, and aquarium glass must be adequately supported. Weight affects handling, transportation, and installation method.
How thick should my glass shelf be for the weight?
For glass shelves: Books/light items, span up to 24 inches: 1/4 inch. General decor, span 24-30 inches: 3/8 inch. Heavy items, span 30-36 inches: 1/2 inch. Very heavy, span over 36 inches: 3/4 inch. Safety factor: shelves should support at least 3× expected load. Tempered glass is 4-5× stronger than annealed of the same thickness but weighs the same. For aquariums, use the specific aquarium glass thickness charts based on tank volume.
What is the difference between annealed, tempered, and laminated glass weight?
Annealed and tempered glass of the same thickness weigh essentially the same (tempered is about 3% denser). Laminated glass (two layers with PVB interlayer) is about 10-15% heavier than single-pane of the same nominal thickness due to the interlayer. A 1/4-inch laminated panel (two 1/8-inch layers + interlayer) weighs about 3.75 lbs/sq ft vs 3.3 lbs/sq ft for standard 1/4-inch. Weight considerations affect frame design, hinge selection, and installation logistics.
