How much gravel do I need?
Calculate the area (length × width) in square feet, then multiply by the depth in feet to get cubic feet. Divide by 27 to convert to cubic yards. For example, a 10ft × 20ft driveway with 4 inches (0.33 ft) depth: 10 × 20 × 0.33 = 66 cu ft ÷ 27 = 2.44 cubic yards.
How deep should gravel be?
For walkways and garden paths: 2-4 inches. For driveways and parking areas: 4-6 inches (or up to 12 inches for heavy vehicles). For French drains: 8-12 inches. Deeper gravel provides better drainage and stability.
How much does a yard of gravel weigh?
A cubic yard of gravel typically weighs 2,400-3,000 lbs (1.2-1.5 tons), depending on the type. Pea gravel is lighter (~2,500 lbs), while river rock is heavier (~2,800 lbs). Standard crushed gravel averages 2,700 lbs per cubic yard.
What type of gravel should I use?
Pea gravel (smooth, rounded) is best for walkways and decorative areas. Crushed stone or angular gravel is better for driveways as it compacts well. River rock is ideal for drainage and landscaping. #57 stone (3/4") is popular for driveways.
