How much does a 2×4 weigh?
A standard 8-foot 2×4 stud weighs approximately: 7-9 lbs when kiln-dried (SPF lumber, ~8% moisture), 9-11 lbs seasoned, and 13-15 lbs green. Actual weight varies by species: Southern Yellow Pine is heavier than White Pine or Spruce. The nominal 2×4 actually measures 1.5 by 3.5 inches, and this calculator uses actual dimensions for accuracy.
How does moisture content affect lumber weight?
Moisture content dramatically affects lumber weight. Green lumber can weigh 40-50% more than kiln-dried lumber because the cell cavities are filled with water. A green 2×4×8 can weigh 15 lbs while its kiln-dried counterpart weighs only 8 lbs. As lumber dries from green (50% MC) to kiln-dried (8% MC), it loses about 30% of its green weight.
What is the difference between nominal and actual lumber dimensions?
Nominal dimensions refer to the rough-sawn size before planing, while actual dimensions are the finished size. A 2×4 has actual dimensions of 1.5 by 3.5 inches. A 1×6 measures 0.75 by 5.5 inches. This calculator uses actual dimensions (width and thickness as entered) for accurate weight calculations. Always measure your lumber rather than relying on nominal sizes.
How do I calculate board feet for lumber?
Board feet are calculated as: (Thickness in inches × Width in inches × Length in feet) / 12. One board foot equals 144 cubic inches of lumber. This is the standard unit for lumber pricing in North America. For example, a 2×4 that is 8 feet long contains (2 × 4 × 8) / 12 = 5.33 board feet. The calculator provides board foot values alongside weight estimates.
