Rectangle Fence Perimeter Calculator

Determine the total fence length needed for your rectangular property. Choose how many sides to fence, subtract gate widths, and get the exact linear footage required.

Subtract gate width from total fence length (0 if no gate)

Full Perimeter = 2 × (Length + Width). Partial perimeters add only the side lengths being fenced. Area = Length × Width. Acres = Area ÷ 43,560. Diagonal = √(Length² + Width²).
For a 100 ft × 80 ft lot fencing all 4 sides with a 4 ft gate: Full perimeter = 360 ft. Net fence length = 356 ft. Area = 8,000 sq ft (0.184 acres). Diagonal = 128.1 ft.

How do I calculate the perimeter of a rectangle for fencing?

Rectangle perimeter = 2 × (Length + Width). For a 100 ft by 80 ft lot: Perimeter = 2 × (100 + 80) = 360 linear feet. If you only fence 3 sides, add the 3 side lengths together. For example, fencing the back and two sides but leaving the front open: 100 + 80 + 80 = 260 linear feet. Remember to subtract gate widths from the total.

How many acres is my rectangular property?

One acre = 43,560 square feet. Multiply Length × Width to get total square footage, then divide by 43,560. For a 100 ft × 80 ft lot: 100 × 80 = 8,000 sq ft ÷ 43,560 = 0.184 acres. A standard 1/4 acre lot is approximately 104 ft × 104 ft (10,890 sq ft). A 1/2 acre lot is approximately 147 ft × 147 ft (21,780 sq ft).

Should I fence all 4 sides or just 3 sides of my yard?

Fencing 3 sides is common when the front of the house faces the street and you want an open front yard. This is typically more economical and maintains curb appeal. Fencing all 4 sides gives maximum privacy and security but costs more and may require permits for front yard fences (height restrictions often apply). Many HOAs require front yards to remain unfenced or limit front fence height to 3-4 feet.

How much does it cost to fence a rectangular yard?

Cost = Total linear feet × Cost per linear foot. For a 100×80 ft lot fencing all 4 sides (360 linear feet): Wood privacy ($22/ft) = $7,920. Chain link ($12/ft) = $4,320. Vinyl ($30/ft) = $10,800. Fencing 3 sides (260 linear feet) reduces cost by about 28%. Add $200-400 per gate. Corner lots have more perimeter to fence per square foot of area.
