Vinyl Fence Calculator

Plan your vinyl fence project with precision. Enter the total fence length in feet, choose the height (3-8 ft), panel width (4, 6, or 8 ft), and fence style (privacy, semi-privacy, picket, ranch rail, or gothic picket). Add walk gates and driveway gates. The calculator determines exactly how many panels, line posts, gate posts, rail sections, post caps, concrete bags, gravel bags, and hardware kits you need. No more over-ordering or running short on your vinyl fence installation.

Total linear feet of fencing needed

Walk gates (typically 3-4 ft wide)

Wider driveway gates (typically 12 ft each)

Vinyl Fence Material Formulas:

Net Length = Total Length − Gate Widths
Panels = Net Length ÷ Panel Width (rounded up)
Line Posts = Panels + 1
Gate Posts = Gates × 2
Total Posts = Line Posts + Gate Posts
Rails = Panels × Rails per Panel
Concrete = 1 bag (80 lb) per post
Example — 150 ft Privacy Fence:
Height: 6 ft, Panels: 6 ft wide, 1 walk gate.
Net length = 150 − 3.5 = 146.5 ft
Panels = 146.5 ÷ 6 = 24.4 → 25 panels
Line posts = 25 + 1 = 26
Gate posts = 1 × 2 = 2
Total posts = 28
Rails = 25 × 3 (6 ft height) = 75 rail sections
Concrete = 28 bags (80 lb)
Post caps = 28
Hardware kits = 25

Example — 75 ft Picket Fence:
Height: 3 ft, 8 ft panels, 1 gate.
Panels = 72 ÷ 8 = 9 panels
Posts = 9 + 1 + 2 = 12 posts

How many vinyl fence panels do I need?

Divide the total fence length by the panel width. For 150 linear feet with 6-ft panels: 150 ÷ 6 = 25 panels. Then add one panel for each gate opening. Each panel requires two posts (shared between adjacent panels). For gates, you need gate posts (heavier duty) on both sides. Example: 150 ft fence, 6-ft panels, 1 walk gate: 25 panels + 26 posts (including gate posts). Always order 1-2 extra panels for future repairs or measurement errors.

How deep should vinyl fence posts be set?

Post holes should be 1/3 of the post height above ground plus 6 inches for gravel drainage. For a 6-ft privacy fence: hole depth = 24-30 inches minimum. Hole diameter: 8-10 inches (3-4 times post width). Use 80 lbs of concrete mix per post (one bag). Below frost line in cold climates — typically 30-48 inches deep. Vinyl posts are hollow — fill with concrete or use a post sleeve insert for strength. Set posts 6 ft apart for 6-ft panels. Always check local building codes for frost depth requirements.

What is included in a typical vinyl fence kit?

A standard vinyl fence kit includes: Pre-assembled panels (rails already installed), line posts (standard hollow posts), post caps (decorative tops), brackets/hardware for mounting panels to posts. Gates sold separately and include: gate frame kit, hinges, latch, gate posts (heavier duty). Additional items: post sleeves (retrofit over wood posts), concrete mix (sold separately), gravel for drainage. Most manufacturers offer 20-year warranties against fading, cracking, and warping. Color is consistent throughout the material (not painted).

How much space should be between vinyl fence boards?

Board spacing depends on fence style: Privacy/solid: no gap (boards touch or overlap), Semi-privacy: 1/2 to 1 inch gaps between boards, Picket: 1 to 2 inches between pickets, Ranch rail: 12-24 inches between rails. Spacing affects material count: semi-privacy uses about 15-20% less material than solid privacy. For view-through fences, check local zoning — many areas restrict gaps larger than 4 inches for pool enclosures. Consistent spacing is critical for professional appearance — use precut spacers.
