How many tons is 1 cubic meter of water?
1 cubic meter of pure water weighs exactly 1 metric ton (1,000 kg) at 4°C. This is by definition: the metric system defines 1 liter = 1 kg of water, and 1 m³ = 1,000 L = 1,000 kg = 1 metric ton. For US customary units: 1 m³ of water = 2,204.62 lbs ≈ 1.102 US short tons. This neat relationship makes water the standard for density measurements. Other materials are compared to water: if a material has density 2.5 t/m³, it is 2.5 times heavier than the same volume of water.
How do I convert cubic meters to metric tons?
Multiply the volume (m³) by the material density (t/m³). Formula: Tons (metric) = m³ × Density (t/m³). Examples: 5 m³ of concrete (2.4 t/m³) = 12 metric tons = 26,455 lbs. 10 m³ of dry sand (1.6 t/m³) = 16 metric tons. 3 m³ of steel (7.85 t/m³) = 23.55 metric tons. Reverse: m³ = Tons ÷ Density. For water (density 1.0), the conversion is 1:1. Always use the correct material density for accurate weight calculations in construction, shipping, and material estimation.
What is the difference between metric ton, US ton, and UK ton?
There are three different "tons": Metric tonne (t) = 1,000 kg = 2,204.62 lbs (used worldwide for science and most commercial purposes). US short ton = 2,000 lbs = 907.185 kg (used in United States). UK long ton = 2,240 lbs = 1,016.05 kg (used in UK for some purposes). The difference matters: 10 metric tons = 11.023 US tons = 9.842 UK tons. When ordering materials or calculating shipping costs, always confirm which ton is being used. This calculator shows all three.
How much does 1 cubic meter of concrete weigh?
Standard concrete weighs approximately 2.4 metric tons per cubic meter (or about 4,000 lbs per cubic yard). This equals: 2,400 kg/m³, 150 lb/ft³, or 4,050 lb/yd³. Lightweight concrete (with lightweight aggregates) weighs 1.6-2.0 t/m³. High-density concrete (with barite or magnetite) can weigh up to 4.0 t/m³. A standard concrete truck carries about 8-10 m³, weighing 19-24 metric tons (42,000-53,000 lbs). This calculator helps estimate concrete weight for structural calculations, foundation design, and transportation planning.
