How is the MCAT scored?
The MCAT consists of four sections, each scored from 118-132. Your total score ranges from 472-528 (sum of four sections). The median score is around 500-501. Each section has approximately 53-59 questions. There is no penalty for wrong answers, so answer every question.
What is a good MCAT score?
A "good" score depends on your target medical schools. The national median is around 500-501. For competitive MD programs, aim for 510+. Top medical schools (Harvard, Johns Hopkins, Stanford) typically have median scores of 518-522. A score of 515+ puts you in the top 10% and makes you competitive for most MD programs.
What MCAT score do I need for medical school?
For MD programs: 504-506 minimum (competitive), 510-511 good, 515+ excellent. For DO programs: 500-503 minimum, 505+ competitive. However, MCAT is just one factor - GPA, clinical experience, research, and personal statement also matter significantly. Check your target schools' average accepted scores.
What are the four sections of the MCAT?
The MCAT has four sections: 1) Chemical and Physical Foundations of Biological Systems (Chem/Phys, 59 questions), 2) Critical Analysis and Reasoning Skills (CARS, 53 questions), 3) Biological and Biochemical Foundations of Living Systems (Bio/Biochem, 59 questions), and 4) Psychological, Social, and Biological Foundations of Behavior (Psych/Soc, 59 questions).
Is there a penalty for wrong answers on the MCAT?
No! The MCAT does not penalize incorrect answers. Your score is based solely on correct answers. This means you should always guess on questions you don't know, as blank answers and wrong answers both count as zero points. Educated guessing can significantly improve your score.
How long is the MCAT exam?
The MCAT is approximately 7.5 hours total, including breaks. The actual exam time is about 6 hours and 15 minutes. Each section is 90-95 minutes. You get two 10-minute breaks and one 30-minute break. It's a marathon test that requires stamina and mental endurance.
Can I retake the MCAT?
Yes! You can take the MCAT up to 3 times in a single year, 4 times in two consecutive years, and 7 times total over your lifetime. Many students retake for improvement. Medical schools typically consider your highest score or average multiple scores, depending on the school's policy. Average improvement is 2-3 points on retake.
