What are Apple App Store and Google Play Store fees?
Apple App Store: 15% on subscription revenue (reduced from 30% for the first year and for Small Business Program), 30% for one-time and non-subscription purchases. Google Play Store: 15% for subscriptions (reduced from 30% after first year), 30% for one-time purchases. Both offer developer programs: Apple Small Business (15% on first $1M), Google (15% on first $200K for individual developers).
What about in-app purchases?
Both Apple and Google take their cut on all in-app purchases, including consumables (coins, gems), non-consumables (unlocks), and subscriptions (premium features). The fee applies to the gross amount before any processing fees. Digital goods and services specifically are subject to the platform fee. Physical goods are exempt from platform fees but may still be listed in the app.
Can I avoid platform fees by using alternative payment?
Neither Apple nor Google allows alternative payment processors within their app stores. Apps that attempt to circumvent fees by guiding users to pay outside the app violate the terms and can be suspended. Some apps link to web checkout, but this must be disclosed in the app and users cannot complete payment within the app. The 15% subscription rate is now competitive with Stripe (2.9% + 30¢) for many SaaS products.
Do platform fees apply to my entire revenue?
No—fees apply only to the portion sold through the app store. If you sell directly on your website, you keep 100%. Many apps use the app store for discovery but convert users to web billing for long-term subscriptions. Also, platform fees only apply to the purchase price—your costs (hosting, support, development) are additional.
What about taxes and developer fees?
Both platforms may withhold taxes based on your location. U.S. developers may have 30% withheld unless you provide W-9. International developers may face withholding tax. Additionally, some regions (EU, UK) apply local VAT which you must remit even if the platform collects. Factor in 5-10% additional for taxes beyond platform fees.
