How do I convert annual salary to hourly rate?

Divide annual salary by 2,080 (40 hours/week x 52 weeks). Example: $75,000 / 2,080 = $36.06/hour. For different hours: divide salary by (hours per week x 52). Part-time 30 hours: $75,000 / 1,560 = $48.08/hour. This is gross pay before taxes - actual take-home is 70-80% of this depending on tax bracket.

What is the difference between bi-weekly and semi-monthly pay?

Bi-weekly: Every 2 weeks = 26 paychecks/year (two "extra" months with 3 paychecks). Semi-monthly: Twice per month (1st and 15th) = 24 paychecks/year. Bi-weekly paychecks are slightly smaller but you get 2 extra per year. Example: $60,000 salary = $2,308 bi-weekly vs $2,500 semi-monthly. Total annual pay is same, just distributed differently.

How many work hours are in a year?

Standard full-time: 2,080 hours (40 hours/week x 52 weeks). Accounting for 2 weeks vacation: 2,000 hours. With holidays and vacation: ~1,960 hours actual working time. Part-time varies: 30 hours/week = 1,560 hours/year, 20 hours/week = 1,040 hours/year. Use these to convert between hourly and annual rates.

Should I negotiate salary or hourly rate?

Salaried positions: Negotiate annual salary, but calculate hourly equivalent to compare (divide by 2,080). If working 50+ hours regularly, hourly rate drops significantly. Hourly positions: Negotiate hourly rate and ask about overtime (1.5x for 40+ hours). $50k salary with 60-hour weeks = $16/hour effective rate vs $24/hour for 40 hours. Know your worth in both formats.
