Sum of Years Digits (SYD)
Calculate accelerated depreciation for your business assets. SYD allows for higher expenses in the early years, making it ideal for assets that lose value quickly or are most productive when new.
What is Sum-of-the-Years' Digits (SYD) depreciation?
SYD is an accelerated depreciation method that results in a higher depreciation expense in the early years of an asset's life and smaller expenses in later years. It is based on the assumption that assets are more productive when new.
How do you calculate the "Sum of Digits"?
The sum of digits for an asset with a life of n years is calculated as: [n × (n + 1)] / 2. For example, for a 5-year asset, the sum is 5 + 4 + 3 + 2 + 1 = 15.
What is the SYD formula for a specific year?
Annual Depreciation = (Remaining Life / Sum of Digits) × (Cost - Salvage Value). In year 1 of a 5-year life, the fraction would be 5/15.
Why use SYD instead of Straight-Line?
SYD is used to match higher depreciation expenses with the higher revenue-generating potential of a new asset. It also provides larger tax shields in the early years, which can improve cash flow.
