How much should I tip at a restaurant?

Standard tipping in the US: 15-18% for adequate service, 18-20% for good service, 20-25% for exceptional service. Fine dining often warrants 20%+. Poor service: 10-15% (consider speaking to manager about issues rather than not tipping, as servers often earn below minimum wage and rely on tips).

Should I tip on the pre-tax or post-tax amount?

Either is acceptable, but pre-tax is most common and fair. If your bill is $100 pre-tax and $108 with tax, tipping 20% on $100 = $20 tip. Some prefer tipping on post-tax for simplicity. Choose what feels right for your budget and service level.

Do I need to tip for takeout or delivery?

Takeout: 10% is courteous for the packaging service. Delivery: 15-20% or $5 minimum, more for bad weather, large orders, or long distances. Many delivery apps add service fees that don't go to drivers, so tip directly when possible.

What other services require tipping?

Common tipping: Hairstylists (15-20%), bartenders ($1-2/drink or 15-20%), hotel housekeeping ($2-5/night), taxi/rideshare (15-20%), food delivery (15-20%), valet ($2-5). When in doubt, 15-20% is safe for most service industries in the US.
