What is the standard tipping percentage in the US?
Standard tipping in the US varies by service type: Restaurant servers typically receive 15-20% (18% is considered "good", 20% is "great"), Bartenders 15-20% per drink, Delivery drivers 15-20%, Hotel housekeeping $2-5 per day, Taxi/Rideshare 15-20%. Tipping culture varies regionally—major coastal cities tend to expect 20-25%, while Midwest and Southern states often use 15-18%.
Should I tip differently in different states?
Yes, tipping customs vary by region. States like California, Washington, and New York (especially NYC) generally expect 20-25% due to higher cost of living and service worker wages. Southern states like Texas, Georgia, and Alabama typically use 15-18%. States with high unionization (like Oregon, Washington) may have servers earning full minimum wage without tips, changing expectations. This calculator uses state-specific averages to help you match local customs.
Is it okay to tip 15% in 2026?
While 15% was the standard decades ago, 18-20% is now considered the baseline at most restaurants, especially in urban areas. 15% is now seen as appropriate only for truly adequate service in lower-cost regions. For exceptional service, 25% or more is becoming more common. When in doubt, check your bill for suggested tip percentages—if the restaurant suggests 18%, 20%, and 22%, that's what the staff expects.
When is it NOT appropriate to tip?
You typically should NOT tip at fast food restaurants, buffets where you serve yourself, or coffee shops (unless table service). Takeout orders usually don't require tipping either. However, do tip for hotel room service, delivery drivers, and any situation where a service worker has provided personal service. If service was genuinely terrible, it's acceptable to tip minimally (5-10%) or not at all, but consider speaking with management.
