TENS Unit Frequency Calculator

Enter your pain details to get optimal TENS unit frequency, pulse width, and electrode placement recommendations.

Acute Pain: 80-150 Hz (gate control) Chronic Pain: 2-10 Hz (endorphin release) Nerve Pain: 100 Hz with modulation Muscle Pain: 35-75 Hz (medium freq) Joint Pain: 60-100 Hz with 180μs pulse
Chronic back pain, Severity 6, 30 min session, Premium unit: 7 Hz, 200μs pulse, Low-frequency mode, 3 sessions/day

What frequency should I use for acute vs chronic pain?

Acute pain (recent injury <3 months): HIGH frequency 80-150 Hz for immediate relief via gate control. Chronic pain (3+ months): LOW frequency 2-10 Hz stimulates endorphin release (takes 30-45 min for effect). Mixed: Burst mode (2 bursts/sec) for best of both worlds.

How long should a TENS session last?

Acute pain: 20-30 minutes, 3-4x/day OK. Chronic pain: 30-60 minutes, 2-3x/day. Muscle stim (EMS): 15-20 minutes. Never exceed 60 min/session. Take 1-hour break between sessions. Skin irritation occurs >3 hours continuous use.

Is higher intensity always better for pain relief?

No! "Strong but comfortable" is ideal. Too weak = ineffective. Too strong = muscle fatigue, increased pain, skin irritation. You should feel a strong tingling/vibration but NOT pain or muscle contraction (unless using EMS mode). Adjust every 10 minutes as nerves adapt.

Can TENS help with specific conditions?

Excellent: Lower back pain (80% respond), Arthritis (knee/hip), Menstrual cramps, Labor pain (60-70% reduction). Moderate: Fibromyalgia, Neuropathy (diabetic), Post-surgical pain. Poor: Headache/migraine, Internal organ pain, Numb areas (nerves damaged).
