How many rakaat in Taraweeh?
The number varies by tradition: commonly 8 rakaat (following the Prophetic practice), 20 rakaat (widely practiced), or 36 rakaat (in some communities). All are acceptable; choose what your community or personal practice follows.
When does Taraweeh start and end?
Taraweeh begins after Isha prayer and can be performed until just before Fajr. Most mosques complete it within 1-2 hours after Isha, but it can be prayed throughout the night.
How long does Taraweeh take?
Duration depends on the number of rakaat and recitation length. Typically: 8 rakaat takes 30-45 minutes, 20 rakaat takes 1-1.5 hours. During the last 10 nights, it may be longer with more Quran recitation.
Can I pray Taraweeh at home?
Yes, Taraweeh can be prayed at home individually or in congregation. However, praying in the mosque is highly recommended for the communal experience and spiritual atmosphere, especially for men.

Witr is an odd-numbered prayer (1, 3, or more rakaat) performed after Taraweeh as the final prayer of the night. It is strongly recommended and considered wajib (necessary) by some scholars.
Do I have to complete the whole Quran in Taraweeh?
No, it's not obligatory. However, many mosques aim to complete the entire Quran (Khatm) during Ramadan's 30 nights by reciting one Juz per night in Taraweeh. This is a beautiful tradition but not required.
Can women pray Taraweeh at the mosque?
Yes, women are encouraged to attend Taraweeh prayers at the mosque if facilities are available. The Prophet (ﷺ) did not prevent women from attending mosques, but their home prayers are also highly rewarded.
What if I miss Taraweeh with the congregation?
You can pray it individually at home at any time after Isha until Fajr. You'll still receive the reward for the prayer, though the congregational reward is greater.
How do I calculate the duration per rakaat?
Divide your total available time by the number of rakaat you plan to pray. For example, if you have 60 minutes for 20 rakaat, that's about 3 minutes per rakaat including short breaks.
