Total stitches in your measurement
How do I calculate knitting stitch count to measurements?
Stitch to inches: Width (in) = Stitches ÷ Stitch gauge (stitches per inch). Inches to stitches: Stitches = Width (in) × Stitch gauge. Always measure your gauge swatch - standard assumptions are estimates. Your tension determines exact measurements. Knit, block, then measure. 4" × 4" is standard for gauge. Count stitches across 4", divide by 4 for actual stitch gauge.
Why is my gauge important?
Gauge determines if your project will be the right size. Different yarn, needle size, and tension all affect gauge. A 50-stitch swatch at 5 stitches/inch = 10" wide, but at 4.5 stitches/inch = 11.1" wide. That 1" difference matters in fitted clothing. Always knit a 4" gauge swatch and count stitches horizontally, then again for row gauge. Wash and block swatch before measuring, as finishing affects size.
What is a standard stitch gauge for different yarn weights?
Approximate gauges: Lace: 8-10 spi, Fingering: 7-8 spi, Sport: 6-6.5 spi, DK: 5.5-6 spi, Worsted: 4-5 spi, Aran: 3.5-4 spi, Bulky: 3-3.5 spi, Super Bulky: 2-2.5 spi. These are estimates - your actual gauge determines results. Always use needle size on yarn label as starting point, adjust for your tension. Different patterns alter fabric density.
How do I resize a knitting pattern?
Calculate your gauge. Ratio = Your gauge ÷ Pattern gauge. Multiply each stitch count by ratio. Example: Pattern says 100 stitches = 20" at 5 spi. Your gauge is 4.5 spi. New: 100 × (4.5÷5) = 90 stitches for 20". Check row gauge too - multiply rows by same ratio. Add ease to final measurement: if pattern includes 2" ease, add for your size. For sweaters, check sleeve, body, and armhole separately. Always swatch.
