How much yarn do I need for a blanket?

Blanket yarn needs vary by size and yarn weight. A typical twin-size (40×60") in worsted needs 1500-1800 yards. Baby blanket (30×30") needs 500-800 yards. Queen-size (60×80") needs 3000-4000 yards. Always buy 10-15% extra for mistakes, joining, and variation. If making a pattern, calculate from gauge swatch before buying all yarn.

What yarn weight is best for blankets?

Worsted weight is the most popular for blankets - easy to work, widely available, warm but not too heavy. Super bulky creates quick blankets but uses more yarn by weight. DK and sport work for lighter blankets. Avoid lace weight unless making a decorative heirloom piece. Choose soft, washable yarn for blankets that get use.

How do I calculate yarn from my gauge?

Knit a 4" × 4" gauge swatch in your pattern. Count stitches and rows. Calculate: (Total stitches ÷ Total inches) × (Width × Length) = stitches in blanket. Then: (Stitches in blanket ÷ Gauge stitches per yard) = yards needed. Better: Weigh your swatch, calculate ounces per square inch, multiply by blanket area. Most patterns give yardage estimates - adjust for your yarn and gauge.

Can I use multiple yarn skeins together?

Yes, but alternate skeins every 2 rows to avoid visible color changes. Buy all yarn at once from same dye lot if possible. Different dye lots can have subtle color variations. When joining new skeins, leave 6" tails and weave in securely. For projects changing colors, plan color sequence and yardage for each section. Some patterns intentionally use multiple yarn weights for texture.
