Volume = Length × Width × Thickness
Standard Densities (lb/in³):
• Carbon Steel: 0.2836
• Stainless Steel: 0.289
• Aluminum 6061: 0.0975
• Brass: 0.307
• Copper: 0.324
• Titanium: 0.163
How do I calculate the weight of a steel plate?
Weight = Length × Width × Thickness × Density. For carbon steel at 0.2836 lb/in³, a 4ft × 8ft × 1/4 inch plate: convert to inches (48 × 96 × 0.25 = 1152 in³), multiply by density (1152 × 0.2836 = 326.7 lbs). Use our calculator for instant results with any material.
What is the standard size of a steel plate?
Common steel plate sizes include 4ft × 8ft, 4ft × 10ft, 5ft × 10ft, and 6ft × 20ft. Standard thicknesses range from 1/8 inch (0.125 in) to 6 inches in 1/16 or 1/8 inch increments. Steel gauge sizes (7-26) are also commonly used for thinner sheets.
How much does a 4x8 sheet of 1/4 inch steel weigh?
A 4ft × 8ft sheet of 1/4 inch carbon steel weighs approximately 326.7 lbs. In metric units, that is about 148.2 kg. Stainless steel would be slightly heavier at ~333 lbs for the same dimensions due to its higher density (0.289 lb/in³).
What is steel gauge thickness?
Steel gauge is a standardized thickness measurement where a higher gauge number means thinner material. For example, 7-gauge steel is 0.1875 inches (3/16 in), 16-gauge is 0.0598 inches (about 1/16 in), and 26-gauge is 0.0179 inches. Gauge standards differ between carbon steel, galvanized steel, and aluminum.
