Road Base Calculator
Plan your road or driveway project with precision. This tool calculates the volume and weight of fill material required, accounting for compaction and material density.
What is a road base?
Road base is the layer of material, typically a mix of crushed stone and dust, that is laid down before paving or as a finished surface for gravel roads. It provides structural integrity and drainage.
How deep should a road base be?
For a typical residential driveway, a base depth of 4 to 6 inches is recommended. For heavy-duty applications like commercial roads or areas with soft soil, 8 to 12 inches may be required.
How much does a ton of road base cover?
One ton of typical road base material (compacted) covers approximately 80 to 100 square feet at a 2-inch depth. This varies based on the density of the specific material used.
Should I account for compaction?
Yes. Road base material is loose when delivered but will lose about 20% of its volume once compacted. This calculator includes an optional compaction factor to ensure you order enough material.
