Quantitative section: 31 questions in 62 minutes
Verbal section: 36 questions in 65 minutes
IR section: 12 questions in 30 minutes
One essay, scored 0-6 in half-point increments
How is the GMAT scored?
GMAT Total Score: 200-800 (10-point increments), based on Quantitative (6-51) and Verbal (6-51) sections. Integrated Reasoning (1-8) and Analytical Writing (0-6) are scored separately and don't affect total score. The test is computer-adaptive—question difficulty adjusts to your performance. Scores are valid for 5 years.
What is a good GMAT score?
Average GMAT: ~565. Good scores by tier: 650+ (competitive MBA programs), 700+ (top 20 schools), 730+ (top 10 / M7), 760+ (Harvard/Stanford/Wharton average). Percentiles: 700 = 88th, 650 = 75th, 600 = 50th. Target varies by school—check your programs' average scores. Quant/Verbal balance matters: top schools want 45+ on both.
Is the GMAT adaptive? How does it work?
Yes! The GMAT is question-level adaptive (more adaptive than GRE). Each answer affects the next question's difficulty in real-time. Higher difficulty = higher potential score. Early questions matter most—they establish your scoring range. Getting hard questions means you're performing well. Never rush early questions; accuracy is critical.
What is Integrated Reasoning and how important is it?
IR tests data analysis, graphics interpretation, multi-source reasoning, and two-part analysis. Scored 1-8 separately from total (200-800). Importance: Growing—many top programs now consider IR. Target: 6+ for competitive schools, 7+ for top programs. Lower priority than Quant/Verbal, but a very low IR (below 4) can hurt applications.
GMAT vs GRE for business school: which is better?
All business schools accept both now. Choose GMAT if: Targeting top MBA programs (slight preference), strong at quick mental math, only applying to business schools. Choose GRE if: Stronger at vocabulary, want more time per question, may apply to other grad programs (PhD, MS). Top MBA programs slightly prefer GMAT (60-70% of admits submit GMAT).
How many times can I take the GMAT?
You can take the GMAT once every 16 days, up to 5 times in 12 months, and 8 times total (lifetime). Most test-takers take it 1-2 times. Many schools accept your highest score or superscore. Average improvement: 30-50 points with 2-3 months of study. You can cancel scores immediately after test (before seeing them).
What GMAT score do I need for top MBA programs?
M7 Schools (Harvard, Stanford, Wharton, Booth, Sloan, Kellogg, Columbia): Average 730-740. Top 10: 720-730. Top 20: 690-720. Top 50: 650-690. These are averages—admits range ±50 points. Strong work experience, leadership, and GPA can offset lower GMAT. Indian/Chinese applicants often need higher scores (740+) due to competitive pools.
