How is the GRE scored?
The GRE has three sections: Verbal Reasoning (130-170), Quantitative Reasoning (130-170), and Analytical Writing (0-6). Total score is Verbal + Quant (260-340). AW is scored separately. The test is computer-adaptive—difficulty adjusts based on your performance. Scores are valid for 5 years.
What is a good GRE score?
Average GRE score: ~302 (150 Verbal + 152 Quant). Good scores: 310+ (above average), 320+ (competitive for top programs), 330+ (excellent for elite schools). Target scores vary by program: Engineering often wants high Quant (165+), Humanities prefers high Verbal (160+). Check your programs' average admitted scores.
Is the GRE adaptive? How does it work?
Yes! The GRE is section-level adaptive. Your performance on the first Verbal section determines difficulty of the second Verbal section (same for Quant). Higher difficulty = potential for higher scores. You must perform well on first sections to unlock higher score ranges. This is why pacing and accuracy matter early.
How important is the Analytical Writing score?
AW importance varies by program. Humanities/Social Sciences programs heavily weight AW (want 4.5+). STEM programs care less (3.5-4.0 often sufficient). Business schools want 4.0+. Low AW scores (below 3.0) can hurt applications. Many programs use AW to assess writing ability and English proficiency.
GRE vs GMAT: which should I take for business school?
Most business schools accept both. GRE: Better if you struggle with quick mental math, want more time per question, or may apply to non-business grad programs. GMAT: Better for top MBA programs (slight preference), tests business-relevant skills. Take practice tests for both to see which suits you. GRE is more common for PhD programs.
How many times can I take the GRE?
You can take the GRE once every 21 days, up to 5 times in a 12-month period. Most students take it 1-2 times. Many schools accept your best scores (some superscore). Improvement averages 3-5 points with proper preparation. Significant improvement requires 2-3 months of focused study between attempts.
What GRE score do I need for top graduate programs?
Top programs (Harvard, Stanford, MIT, Princeton): Typically want 325+ total, with section scores 160+. Competitive programs: 315-325. Good programs: 305-315. Varies by field: Top engineering programs want Quant 167+, top English programs want Verbal 165+. Check specific program averages. High GRE alone doesn't guarantee admission—research, GPA, letters matter more for PhD.
