Grade Curve Calculator

Calculate your curved grade using different curve methods. Enter your original score and choose a curve type to see your adjusted grade.

For flat curve: points to add. For scale: highest score in class. For percentage: boost percentage.

Flat: Score + Points | Square Root: √(Score/Max) x Max | Scale: (Score/Highest) x Max
With a square root curve, a score of 64/100 becomes √(64/100) x 100 = 0.8 x 100 = 80/100, turning a D into a B!

What is a grade curve?

A grade curve is an adjustment made to test scores to account for exam difficulty or to ensure a certain grade distribution. Common methods include adding flat points, using square root curves, or scaling to the highest score.

How does the square root curve work?

The square root curve uses the formula: Curved Score = √(Original Score / Max Score) x Max Score. This benefits lower scores more than higher scores. For example, a 64/100 becomes 80, while a 81/100 becomes 90.

What is scaling to the highest score?

This method takes the highest score in the class and makes it 100% (or the max score). All other scores are proportionally adjusted. If the highest score was 85/100, a score of 68 would become 80.

Is grade curving fair?

Opinions vary. Proponents say curves account for difficult exams and ensure reasonable grade distributions. Critics argue curves can be arbitrary and create competition among students rather than mastery of material.
