Final Grade Calculator
Calculate what score you need on your final exam to achieve your desired grade.
What score do I need on my final exam to pass?
Use formula: Needed = (Desired - Current x Current Weight) / Final Weight. Example: Current grade 75%, final is 25% of grade, want 80% overall. Needed = (80 - 75x0.75) / 0.25 = (80 - 56.25) / 0.25 = 95%. You need 95% on final. If result > 100%, goal is impossible. If negative, you've already achieved the grade. Calculator does math automatically.
How are final exams weighted in overall grade?
Typical weightings: Final exam: 20-40% (most common 25-30%), Midterms: 20-30%, Homework/quizzes: 20-30%, Projects/papers: 10-20%, Participation: 5-10%. Example: 85% current grade, 30% final weight means current work = 70% of grade = 59.5 points. Need final to add remaining 20.5+ points for 80% total. Higher final weight = more impact on grade, more pressure but more opportunity.
Can I still get an A if I failed the midterm?
Depends on midterm weight and remaining opportunities. Example: Failed midterm (50%, worth 25%), current average 60%, final worth 30%, other work 45%. Need final to pull grade up significantly. If final is only 20-25%, probably impossible. If final is 40-50%, might be possible with perfect score plus excellent other work. Use calculator to check feasibility. Focus on realistic goals.
Should I study more for the final or other assignments?
Prioritize by weight and difficulty. High-weight final (30%+): Focus here if grade is on borderline. Easy assignments worth more: Do those first (guaranteed points). Final worth <20%: Focus on remaining assignments if possible. Strategy: Secure easy points first, then study for final. If final can't change letter grade (too low or already secure), redirect effort. Calculate multiple scenarios to optimize studying time.
