Party Ice Cube Quantity Calculator

Never run out of ice at your party. Calculate exact ice needs for drinks and cooling.

Expected number of party guests

How long the party will last

Ice (lbs) = Guests × Hours × Type Multiplier + Cooling Buffer
30 guests, 4 hours, cocktail party: 144 lbs for drinks + 36 lbs cooling = 180 lbs (18 × 10-lb bags)

How much ice do I need for a party?

General rule: 1 pound of ice per guest per hour for drinking. Add 1 pound per guest for cooling food/drinks. For a 4-hour party with 20 guests: 20 guests × 4 hours = 80 lbs for drinks + 20 lbs for cooling = 100 lbs total. Summer/outdoor parties need 1.5x this amount. Always round up - melted ice is better than running out.

What size ice cubes should I use?

Standard cubes (1 inch) work for most drinks and melt at moderate rate. Large cubes (2 inch) melt slower - ideal for whiskey, old fashioneds. Crushed ice is essential for tiki drinks, mint juleps, and tiki cocktails but melts fastest. Have both types if serving varied cocktails. Avoid small fast-melting cubes from cheap trays.

Should I buy bagged ice or make my own?

For 20+ guests, buy bagged ice - home freezers make 2-5 lbs/day, bags give 7-20 lbs instantly. Bagged ice is also cleaner (filtered water, commercial freezers). Make your own for dinner parties (clear ice looks elegant) or when you need specific sizes. Plan 3-5 days ahead if making all ice yourself.

How do I keep ice from melting too fast?

Store ice in cooler with tight lid, wrapped in towels (insulation). Keep coolers in shade, never direct sun. Use block ice - melts slower than cubes. Pre-chill cooler before adding ice. Do not drain meltwater - cold water insulates remaining ice. Open cooler minimally. For serving, use ice buckets with tongs, not bare hands (body heat melts ice).
