How much crushed limestone do I need for a driveway?
A standard driveway needs 4-6 inches of compacted crushed limestone base. For a 20×50 ft driveway at 4 inches deep: you need approximately 12.3 cubic yards, weighing about 16.5 tons. The #57 (3/4 inch) crushed stone is most commonly used for driveways as it compacts well and provides good drainage. Add 10% extra for compaction loss.
What is the weight of crushed limestone per cubic yard?
Crushed limestone weighs approximately 2,400 to 2,700 pounds per cubic yard (1.2 to 1.35 tons per cubic yard), depending on the stone size and compaction level. #57 stone is typically around 2,500 lb/yd³. Lighter grades like #8 stone weigh about 2,400 lb/yd³. Always order 10-15% extra to account for settling and compaction.
How deep should limestone be for different uses?
Recommended depths vary: Driveways: 4-6 inches of crushed stone over compacted subgrade. Walkways: 2-3 inches of crushed stone. Paver base: 4-6 inches of compacted #57 stone. French drains: 12-18 inches of clean #57 stone around perforated pipe. Landscaping beds: 2-3 inches of decorative gravel. Always compact in 4-inch lifts for best results.
What is the difference between #57 and #8 crushed stone?
#57 crushed stone has particles ranging from 3/4 inch to 1 inch and is the most popular size for driveways and base work. #8 crushed stone is smaller at 1/2 inch to 3/8 inch, making it better for walkways and decorative use. #4 crushed stone at 1 to 1.5 inches is used for heavy base applications. Smaller stone packs tighter but provides less drainage than larger stone.
