Grade Calculator

Calculate your grades with precision. Convert points to percentages, see your letter grade, or find out how many points you need to reach your target grade.

Grade % = (Points Earned / Total Points) × 100; Points Needed = (Target % × Total Points) - Current Points
85 points out of 100 total = 85% = B grade. To get 90% with 320/500 points: need (0.90 × 500) - 320 = 130 more points

How do you calculate a grade percentage?

Grade percentage is calculated by dividing points earned by total points possible, then multiplying by 100. Formula: Grade % = (Points Earned / Total Points) × 100. For example, if you earned 85 out of 100 points, your grade is (85 / 100) × 100 = 85%. This applies to individual assignments, tests, or overall course grades.

What is the standard grading scale?

The most common grading scale is: A+ (97-100%), A (93-96%), A- (90-92%), B+ (87-89%), B (83-86%), B- (80-82%), C+ (77-79%), C (73-76%), C- (70-72%), D+ (67-69%), D (63-66%), D- (60-62%), F (below 60%). However, grading scales can vary by institution - some schools use a 10-point scale (90-100 = A, 80-89 = B, etc.) or different cutoffs.

How many points do I need to get an A?

To find points needed for a target grade: Points Needed = (Target % × Total Points) - Current Points. For example, if you have 320 out of 500 total points and want 90% (450 points total), you need 450 - 320 = 130 more points. If fewer than 130 points remain, achieving 90% is impossible. This helps you plan study priorities for remaining assignments.

What is the difference between weighted and unweighted grades?

Unweighted grades use a standard 4.0 scale where A=4.0, B=3.0, C=2.0, D=1.0, F=0. This calculator shows unweighted percentages. Weighted grades give extra points for honors/AP classes (A=4.5 or 5.0). Weighted GPAs can exceed 4.0. Colleges often recalculate GPAs using their own systems. For weighted grade calculations, use our Weighted Grade Calculator.
