Size M, simple dress, 45 inch fabric: 2.25 yards exact, 2.6 yards recommended

How much fabric do I need for a simple dress?

For a simple dress without fitting (A-line, loose), size XS-L needs 2.25 yards, size XL needs 2.5 yards, size 2XL+ needs 2.75 yards at 44-45" width. At 54-60" width, reduce by 25%. These estimates include a safety margin for straight patterns. Fitted or pattern-adjusted garments may need more.

What if my fabric is narrower than 44 inches?

Vintage 36" fabric requires more yardage. Add approximately 30-50% to the calculated yardage. For example, if 45" fabric needs 2 yards, 36" fabric may need 2.5-3 yards. Always verify pattern tissue fits your fabric width before buying.

How do I adjust for a pattern with matching prints?

Fabric with prints that require matching (stripes, plaids, florals with directional patterns) needs 25-50% extra for pattern alignment. Also buy extra for nap direction if using velvet or corduroy. Consider nap positioning when cutting - adds to waste factor.

Can I use this for kids clothing patterns?

This calculator is designed for adult patterns. Kids patterns (up to size 14) typically need 1-1.5 yards for full garments regardless of type. Reduce estimates by 25-50% for childrenswear. Always check pattern envelope for specific yardage recommendations.
