Punch Force Calculator
Calculate the force needed to punch holes in sheet metal accurately. Enter material type, hole shape, thickness, and die clearance to get required press tonnage with a built-in 25% safety margin.
Only used when Custom Material is selected
For rectangular/obround shapes
Thickness of the material being punched
Typically 5-15% for most materials
Shear Area = Perimeter × Thickness
Round Perimeter = π × Diameter
Square Perimeter = 4 × Width
Rectangular Perimeter = 2 × (W + L)
Recommended Press = Calculated Tons × 1.25
Die Opening = Punch Diameter + 2 × Clearance
How is punch force calculated?
Punch force is calculated as F = τ × A, where τ is the material shear strength and A is the shear area (perimeter × thickness). For a 0.5-inch round hole in 1/8-inch mild steel: Perimeter = π × 0.5 = 1.571 in, Shear Area = 1.571 × 0.125 = 0.196 in², Force = 0.196 × 50,000 = 9,800 lbs = 4.9 tons.
What is the recommended press tonnage?
Always add a 25% safety margin to the calculated force. Your press should be rated at least 1.25× the calculated tonnage. For a job requiring 6 tons of calculated force, use at least an 8-ton press. This accounts for material variations, dull tooling, and friction losses.
What is the correct die clearance for punching?
Die clearance is typically 5-15% of material thickness per side. For mild steel: 10-12% per side. For aluminum: 8-10% per side. For stainless steel: 15-20% per side. Too little clearance causes excessive burr and tool wear. Too much clearance creates a rough edge and large rollover.
What is stripping force in punching?
Stripping force is the force required to pull the punch back out of the material after piercing. It is usually about 10-15% of the total punch force. The stripping force increases with the friction between the punch and material, which depends on clearance, lubrication, and material springback.
